Lines and Poetry: Dubai Calligraphy Biennial Exhibition Celebrates Arabic Calligraphy

DUBAI, 19 October / WAM / His Excellency Mohammed Ahmed Al Murr, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Library Foundation, opened the “Lines and Poetry” exhibition, which is organized by the Mohammed bin Rashid Library as part of the activities of the first session of the “Dubai Calligraphy Biennial”, which is currently being held and continues until October 31. .
The opening of the exhibition was witnessed by Dr. Saeed Mubarak bin Kharbash, Executive Director of the Arts and Literature Sector at Dubai Culture, and the artistic curator, Mohammed Firas Abbou, where they viewed the group of works that were distinguished by the diversity of their lines, the uniqueness of their ideas, and the visions of their makers, artists and calligraphers who represent different nationalities and cultures.
His Excellency Mohammed Ahmed Al-Murr stressed that these collectibles are not just artistic paintings, but rather an embodiment of our history, culture, and love of art and beauty. He expressed his hope that these works will inspire the new generation to continue interest and appreciation for the art of Arabic calligraphy, as it is an integral part of the Arab and Islamic identity.
For his part, Dr. Saeed Mubarak bin Kharbash stressed the importance of the works presented by the “Lines and Poetry” exhibition and the diversity that characterizes it in the art of Arabic calligraphy, pointing out that the art of calligraphy represents one of the components of Arab culture and the most prominent tools for expressing its creative stock, with its special aesthetics in its geometry and details. Its diversity and vitality contributed to deepening its relationship with other plastic arts, which was evident in the variety of works presented by the exhibition.
He also stressed Dubai Culture’s keenness to celebrate and pay attention to this art through the “Dubai Calligraphy Biennale”, which represents an innovative platform that enables artists and talents to display their creativity and various works, which is in line with the authority’s commitments aimed at creating a sustainable creative environment capable of enriching and strengthening the power of art. The exhibition includes 33 artistic paintings that formed part of the personal collections of His Excellency Muhammad Ahmad Al-Murr. They were inspired by the poems of Al-Mutanabbi, Ibn Zaydoun, Elia Abu Madi, Nizar Qabbani, and Dr. Ahmed Amin Al-Madani, and were written in the Thuluth Al-Jali, Naskh, Nasta’liq, Kufi, and Sunbali scripts, as well as the Jali Al-Tumar script, which reflects the aesthetics and uniqueness of Arabic calligraphy.
The paintings, which differed in their Arabic, Turkish and Persian artistic design and decoration styles, bear the fingerprints of elite Turkish calligraphers, including Muhammad and Othman Ozjay, and the Syrian calligraphers Ahmed al-Bari, Jamal Bostan, Munir al-Shaarani, Muhammad Farouk al-Haddad, Osama al-Hamzawi, Abd al-Rahman al-Abdi, and Juma Muhammad Hamahr, in addition to the Egyptian calligraphers Musaad Khader al-Borsaidi and Ahmed Fahd. The Sudanese calligrapher Taj Al-Sir Hassan, the Jordanian Yaqoub Ibrahim Suleiman, the Iraqi Bazar Al-Arbili, and his colleague Hakim Ghannam.
The exhibition also included works by Iranian calligraphers Abbas Akhavin, Rasoul Moradi, Mohammad Khulusi, Habib Ramadanpour, Mohsen Rakabi, Shoghiyan, Mehdi Khodah Banah, and calligrapher Elaha Khatami.
As part of its participation in the activities of the Dubai Calligraphy Biennial, the Mohammed bin Rashid Library is hosting a variety of workshops presented by artists Yoshimi Fujii, Dr. Antoine Abi Aad, Lina Adhami, and Al-Anoud Bukhammas, during which they celebrate classic and contemporary Arabic and Japanese calligraphy.
It is noteworthy that the inaugural edition of the “Dubai Calligraphy Biennale” witnesses the organization of 19 diverse art exhibitions and contributes to the activation of more than 35 cultural and heritage sites around Dubai. It is held with the main support of the “Al Rostamani Group” and the support of “Sandooq Al Watan” and in partnership with a group of partners and institutions active in the scene. It includes the Dubai Design District, the Culture and Science Symposium, the Mohammed bin Rashid Library, Expo City Dubai, “Gate Avenue” in the Dubai International Financial Center, the Museum of the Future, the Sultan Bin Ali Al Owais Cultural Foundation, the Juma Al Majid Center, the Department of Economy and Tourism in Dubai, the Dubai Government Media Office, the Dubai Municipality, and Al Serkal Avenue.
