Lindsey Vonn, the former North American ski legend, hailed Roger Federer as her “GOAT” (Greatest Of All Time) in a heartfelt message on X. This came after some Novak Djokovic fans criticized their words of praise for the Swiss maestro.
Vonn had posted a message in which she described her experiences skiing with Federer and called the Swiss the all-time GOAT for what he has done for the sport, regardless of records and titles.
“Usually the people you admire disappoint you in one way or another, but not Roger Federer. Roger is the epitome of a true athlete and champion in every sense. We talked about skiing together for so long, I was not sure if it would happen.
But here we are: retired, skiing and enjoying life! Thanks for this reminder, Rog. You and your family are truly unique and no matter what the statistics say, you are the GOAT for me, forever, because it takes more than just numbers to have the kind of influence you have, I’m just one of Millions,” she wrote.
Defense against criticism
The talented skier’s words drew criticism from fans of other tennis players, particularly Novak Djokovic’s followers, who attacked the American for her words towards the Swiss maestro.
In response to her critics, Lindsey Vonn defended her words and Roger Federer. Vonn later deleted her post, but stressed that she made this choice to not allow negative comments to cloud her memories of Federer.
“The post was not a comparison but a tribute to my friend who had a huge influence on my life. Everyone goes crazy when the term GOAT is used. Roger Federer can be my GOAT no matter what anyone else thinks.
I just had to, I didn’t want negative comments to ruin my memory,” she wrote. “GOAT or Greatest of All Time is a subjective title. What makes someone great? Is it the stats? Is it the records? Is it the influence? Is it the character? Is it all of those together? People have different opinions, and That is a good thing.
My GOAT may not be your GOAT, and there will always be a debate, but opinions are just opinions and everyone is entitled to their own,” Lindsey added.
Federer’s influence and the future of the Laver Cup
In an interview with the Süddeutsche Zeitung, the former Swiss tennis player spoke with his agent Tony Godsick about possible innovations in the Laver Cup.
Godsick explained that the future of the Laver Cup could potentially lie in Saudi Arabia. “One day the Laver Cup could be held in Saudi Arabia. We switch between European cities and cities around the world.
I expect that Saudi Arabia will be part of this discussion at some point in the future,” said Godsick. Federer’s words complemented those of his agent: “Sport is a language that everyone speaks. Sport can facilitate dialogue and change.
I see myself captaining the team one day, but I would like to see someone else in that position, from the post-Rod Laver generation. Someone in the age group of 50 to 65 years. These guys deserve it first, before my turn.”
