Lindsay van Zundert Withdraws from European Figure Skating Championships: Dutch Selection Opts Out

Dec 15, 2023 at 1:05 PM Update: 2 minutes ago

Lindsay van Zundert will not participate in the European Figure Skating Championships in Kaunas, Lithuania, next month. The eighteen-year-old from Brabant is not part of the Dutch selection on the advice of her coaches Thomas Kennes and Carine Herrygers.

“Due to private circumstances, Lindsay has not been able to train enough lately to be competitive in Kaunus,” Kennes said in a KNSB press release on Friday. “That is why we have jointly decided that it is better not to participate in the European Championship.”

Van Zundert is the best figure skater in the Netherlands. Last year in Beijing she was the first Dutch figure skater at the Olympic Games since 1976 and at the beginning of 2023 she finished fourteenth in the free freestyle at the European Championships in Espoo, Finland.

According to Kennes, it was a “difficult decision” to cancel the upcoming European Championships. “But at the moment it is the only right one. In the coming period we will mainly focus on the longer-term goals on the way to the 2026 Olympic Games.”

The European Championships in Kaunus last from January 8 to 14. Due to Van Zundert’s cancellation, the Netherlands is not represented among the women and men. Daria Danilova and Michel Tsiba participate on behalf of the Netherlands in the pair riding and Hanna Jakucs and Alessio Galli take action in the ice dancing.
