Linda’s bags left at airport: ‘Not back for two days’

What looked like a pleasant start to her holiday ended in huge disappointment for 38-year-old Linda Langenhuizen and her family from Son. When they landed in Greece on Sunday afternoon, it turned out that their luggage had been left at Eindhoven Airport. It was only when they were waiting for the baggage claim in Thessaloniki that they heard the bad news. “Right.”

At first glance, there didn’t seem to be a problem on Sunday, says Linda. “We were supposed to fly around 12:30 p.m. There was no delay in the signs so we started boarding. “

When they got to the plane, Linda, her husband Dimitris and their four-year-old son Rakis had to wait in a long line at the back. “We stayed for more than an hour in the middle of the sun. That’s not nice with a small child,” she says. There seemed to be no facilities for a disabled man. “A man in a wheelchair next to us said we had to wait because we couldn’t get to the elevator that would take us to the plane. “

“The employee said in Greek that all the luggage was left in Eindhoven.”

With just over an hour’s delay, the plane was able to leave for Thessaloniki in Greece. Linda and her family did not know at the time that their luggage had not gone airborne at all.

“We had been standing at the baggage claim for at least twenty minutes when a Greek woman from the airport suddenly approached the band,” she said. in Greek that all the luggage was left at Eindhoven Airport. “My husband is Greek and we were told right away. Then she told it in English.”

“An elderly couple was very shocked.”

Then most Dutch people understood what was going on, but not all of them. “An older couple who didn’t speak English were a little shocked when we shared the news. We were just thinking, how do you let a plane go without luggage?”

Linda also finds the communication poor. “We understand that there is a shortage of workers. That is true in every industry today. But to tell people after waiting twenty minutes at the belt that the luggage left behind? That’s crazy.”

Linda and her family are visiting her husband’s family in the small town of Rachi Artas. They live more than three hours away from the airport in Thessaloniki. It was only when they had been at the destination for a few hours that Linda and her husband heard from Ryanair.

“The luggage will not be delivered to our destination until Tuesday night.”

“They emailed with apologies and said the luggage would arrive in Thessaloniki tomorrow afternoon. It will then be taken by bus to our destination on Tuesday, where we can pick up the luggage at the bus station ,” she said.

This means that the family will be without luggage for more than two days. “The shops are closed on Sunday afternoons in Greece, so we have to buy clothes and toiletries tomorrow morning. Especially slippers, because my feet sweat a lot now,” said Linda.

The family realizes that they are lucky to live with relatives. “I’m the same size as my sister-in-law and maybe I can borrow something from her,” she says. “If you really are on vacation, you have nothing at all. I hope we get a refund for the expenses we incur, but I’m afraid of it.”

However, the family won’t let it ruin their vacation. “We’re just laughing about it and we’ll have to see if the luggage is really there on Tuesday night. Anyway, we’re going to enjoy it now.”
