Sweden played, however significantly better in the second half than in the first, and a quick equalizer from Juventus striker Lina Hurtig – who started at the expense of Häcken star Stina Blackstenius – made the Swedish World Cup three wake up.
3-2 to Sweden came from just the speed when Fridolina Rolfö scored from a distance.
Then Kerr got his penalty – and missed.
After a clear hand situation on championship debutant Filippa Angeldahl in the penalty area, Australia’s biggest football star stepped forward in the Japanese night.
But Swedish national team goalkeeper Hedvig Lindahl has saved penalties in championships before. Now the 38-year-old Kerr read exactly right to the notes of recorded audience sound and stopped the 27-year-old from a hat trick in front of the corona-empty stands.
– It was probably not the best punishment in world history if you are to be honest, Lindahl says with a little laugh.
– But I only got the feeling that she would go a little to the left. So my famous legs got to take it. I think I read her a little.
The rescue and the Swedish 3-2 lead gave Sweden more confidence.
And in the 82nd minute, an incoming Blackstenius was able to nail the final result 4-2 in a goal-rich match.
The goal was Blackstenius’ third in the Olympics, but in the final stages of the match, disturbing scenes came when the 25-year-old was punched hard by Australia’s Alanna Kennedy and forced to limp.
Afterwards, however, the star striker gave up reassuring message.
– It was just about taking the safe before the unsafe, she says.
Now New Zealand is waiting – who will meet the USA later on Saturday – on Tuesday. And with two victories, Sweden has the quarter-final ticket in its pocket.
– I was quite upset in the first half, but then we found another level, says Hedvig Lindahl.
– So in the end we probably get the most plus.

Sweden – Australia 4–2 (1–1)
Match rating: 3
Anyone who wanted to see many goals got it. Anyone who wanted to see Sweden convince in the same way as against the world champion USA (3-0) did not get it. It was a match with two completely different halves where Blågult started carelessly and did not manage to keep track of the big star Sam Kerr. But in the second half, Sweden’s star striker also shone. There it became a goal each for Lina Hurtig and Stina Blackstenius and also the evening’s second for Fridolina Rolfö .
The lyre of the match
Hedvig Lindahl, Sweden. The 38-year-old spread calm in the team and saved a penalty that could have taken Australia back into the match.
Quarter-final ready
Sweden is ready for the Olympic quarter-finals after two straight victories. This is how Olympic football continues for the Swedish part:

Recorded audience sounds – bu or bä?
The stands are empty in the Olympics. During Sweden’s premiere match against the USA , recorded audience sounds were heard faintly in the arena. Against Australia, the volume had been increased. Really.
– It is … interesting, says Sweden Hedvig Lindahl.
– It’s fun to play in front of a little “noice”. But sometimes we wished it was a little quieter so we could talk a little more. But I understand the idea that there will be a little atmosphere and it will be to some extent.
When the league captain Peter Gerhardsson when asked if he heard the grandstand sound, he answers in one word, loudly:
– REAL.
