AUSTRALIAN OPEN – At the Australian Open, Linda Nosková (19) advanced to the quarterfinals two days after scalping world number one Iga Šwiateková and improved her Grand Slam maximum for the third time. She did not enjoy the round of 16 match against Elina Svitolina (29) in the Margaret Court Arena, the opponent gave up after three games due to back pain. In the fight for a place among the top four, the Czech teenager will challenge another Ukrainian, Dajana Jastremska (23), who knocked out two-time champion Viktoria Azarenkova (34).
“Today’s win was definitely not born in the way I would have imagined. I feel sorry for Elina, I hope she gets well soon. And we’ll see what happens in the next round,” Nosková said immediately after the progress in the post-match interview on the court.
“I had to concentrate a lot on today’s match, because I had the win over Šwiateková behind me. People reacted a lot to it and I had a tendency to keep coming back to it. It was mentally difficult to concentrate on the next match,” admitted the native of Vsetín after the win over Svitolina.
This year’s Australian Open in women’s singles will see at least one surprising finalist. The winner of Nosková’s duel with Jastremská will face one of the quartet of Qinwen Zheng, Océane Dodinová, Jasmine Paoliniová and Anna Kalinská in the semi-finals.
The Czech tennis player is in the quarterfinals and in the bottom half of the spider. Barbora Krejčíková already defeated Mirra Andrejevová on Sunday and is preparing for Tuesday’s semi-final match against the defending champion Arina Sabalenková.
