The reactions are pouring in after the police in Lincolnshire in England issued a special Christmas warning earlier in December.
On the occasion of their annual Christmas campaign “Operation Rudolf”, the city’s police are taking extra measures to protect residents from crime at Christmas time.
This time there is one warning in particular that has attracted attention.
– Do not do it
It is Phil Baker from Lincolnshire Police who is behind the campaign and the Christmas warning. It became published on the police website on 2 December this year.
Baker made a long list of steps the police are taking – in addition to various advice for Christmas that he wants residents to follow.
Christmas decorations amaze: – Costs a few thousand
One of the pieces of advice is to store wallets and phones in bags and not in back pockets during Christmas shopping. Another is to leave at least one light on when you are away for Christmas.
– By all means get yourself a lamp with a timer that can light up the house at different times of the day, he writes on the website.
Several of the pieces of advice are about hiding money and taking care of purchase receipts. But the warning that has made most people stand up goes as follows:
– Don’t turn your home into a shop window by leaving presents under the tree. Visible valuables can attract thieves – so don’t.

Creates reactions
Several Christmas-happy souls have reacted to Baker’s controversial advice. Followers have shared their frustrations on both the police’s Facebook and X user:
– What!? This will be like boycotting Christmas, writes a man named James in the comments section.
– How about having a police that does its job instead of the whole society having to adapt to the criminals, writes another.
Several write that the council is “just sad”, and say that they refuse to hide their gifts.
– Gifts under the tree have always been a thing. The kids love it, it’s Christmas magic. I never stop doing that, comments a woman named Liz.
The boyfriend stiffened
– Becomes like an advertisement
Earlier in December Baker told the BBC that the warning is not about being a “Grinchen”, but that the police want to make Christmas enjoyable and safe for everyone.
– Criminals love presents under the tree as much as you do, he told the broadcaster.
Furthermore, he believed that a potential burglary would be much more destructive to the Christmas coziness than the presents not being under the tree.
– Having large, expensive gifts on display under the tree is like a single big advertisement for potential thieves. Your Christmas could be ruined, he continued.
Although, according to Baker, the advice is to make Christmas safer for Lincolnshire’s population, several people write on social media that they will continue as before.
