Get the greatest American hero down from the monument and let the past dialogue with the present. Such is the intention of Lincoln’s Dilemma, the documentary series that has just released Apple TV +. “Everyone takes what they want from him. He is, by popular proclamation, the greatest president in our history. He has statues of him everywhere and he is so intangible so everyone uses him for his own purposes. Our goal was to stop seeing him as a piece of stone and rethink him as someone very complicated who was crucial in an equally complex era, ”Josh Tyrangiel, the executive producer of him, tells Page 12.
The dilemma that the title refers to, obviously, is the abolition of slavery during the American Civil War. Its four episodes stand out for the journalistic investigation, the voice of historians with diverse opinions and an aesthetic commitment that gives the sensation of seeing daguerreotypes in movement. “There are about a hundred frames of Lincoln and we know them all here, so to commit to what we have, we had to bring it to life from another place,” explains the head of it. To this animation is added the voice of renowned actors such as Jeffrey Wright and Bill Camp, in the narration and Lincoln, respectively.
Another noteworthy aspect is the recovery of vignettes and illustrations at the time when viscerality ruled the media. “In the United States we talk a lot about our culture of insult. About how something can be analyzed in a mean, ugly and harsh way. But suddenly you find yourself with what was done then and you notice that they went straight to the bone. They had no personal bond, if they saw a weakness they attacked it terribly. It is very striking how emaciated they were, ”says the journalist and reference for the Vice media outlet.
Lincoln’s Dilemma, then, is dedicated to exploring his presidency in a specular way with the contemporary. He begins and ends with the recognizable image of the sculpture of the 16th Mandatory in Washington. A few meters from the monument that shows him sitting and stern, the riots of the takeover of the White House by followers of Donald Trump take place. “We live in an era of a lot of political division, all over the world, and I think it is because we do not analyze the past as much. We have been thus divided in our opinions and readings. We have been just as emotional and cruel with our opinions. Civilization may be this divided, but what kind of leader does it take to get through such a tumultuous period? What flexibility should the population have? where do you leave your principles and start negotiating? How do we get out of this bind? It makes no sense to pretend that we are not, the series then aims to make the audience reflect in the same way that Lincoln did, ”explains Tyrangiel.
