Lin Yu-ting withdraws from a tournament: “It is not certain that she is a woman”

The issue of gender in women’s boxing is back under discussion, after the events that caused a lot of talk at the Paris Olympics and which involved the Algerian Imane Khelif and the Taiwanese Lin Yu-ting, respectively winners of the gold medal in the categories -66kg and -57kg. The Asian athlete decided today to withdraw from an international competition in Great Britain after, according to her federation, the World Boxing organization (the new association created in opposition to the IBA and which should manage boxing at the Los Angeles Olympics) questioned his gender suitability.

Lin had been the subject of a dispute in Paris between the International Olympic Committee (IOC), which had authorized both to compete, and the International Boxing Federation (IBA), which had excluded them from the 2022 and 2023 World Championships claiming they had failed to pass a test which confirmed their belonging to the female gender.

Now a new case in Sheffield

Now a new case. Lin was registered for the World Cup finals organized in Sheffield by World Boxing, which currently has 55 members, including the Italian Fpi – there are eight Italian men and women competing in Sheffield – and the Taiwanese federation. However, Lin decided to withdraw after World Boxing questioned his suitability to fight with women, because, as the Taiwanese federation says, “the newly created body does not have the clear regulatory policies of the IOC which guarantee the protection of athletes’ rights”.

Lin had proposed a full medical examination

Lin had offered to undergo a full medical examination in Britain, but World Boxing would not accept. So, to avoid further misunderstandings, the coach and sports officials decided to withdraw. Taiwanese Prime Minister Cho Jung-tai said the government would “actively strive to protect and guarantee” Lin’s rights to participate in future international competitions
