The world of short track speed skating is witnessing a historic moment as Lin Xiaojun (formerly Lim hyo-jun), the first naturalized Chinese athlete in the sport, prepares to represent China on the international stage. The Harbin Winter Asian games Organizing Committee recently announced Lin’s inclusion in China’s short track team, marking his debut as a member of the Chinese national team.
Lin Xiaojun, who previously won gold in the men’s 1500m at the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter olympics as part of the South Korean team, faced a tumultuous journey after a disciplinary suspension by the Korea Ice Federation. His subsequent naturalization to China and the International Olympic Committee (IOC) regulations prevented him from competing in the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics. However, Lin made a triumphant return during the 2022-23 ISU World Cup season, securing gold medals in the men’s 500m, 5000m relay, and mixed 2000m relay at the ISU World Championships in the Netherlands.
“This is the first time that Lin Xiaojun will participate in the international competition as a member of the Chinese national team,” the announcement highlighted. On the women’s side, veteran skater Fan Kexin, frequently enough dubbed the “Queen of Fouls,” is set to compete.
