The manager of a limousine company has been found guilty in New York State of manslaughter, after the death of 20 people in 2018 in an accident involving one of his vehicles which had failed technical inspection. It was one of the deadliest road accidents in the last two decades in the United States.
The 17 passengers of the limousine had all been killed, as well as their driver as well as two people who were in the parking lot of Schoharie where the vehicle had finished its race after having, it seems, grilled a stop sign. Among the passengers were four sisters, one of whom was celebrating her birthday.
The statement of the verdict caused a strong emotion, according to the images of the local television channels. Screams were heard in the part of the court where the relatives of victims were, some of whom were in tears. Nauman Hussain is the son of the owner of the Prestige Limousine company, to which the accident vehicle belonged.
The investigation showed that he had received, several months before the accident, warnings from the New York State police and the Department of Transportation, telling him that the driver killed was not authorized to drive this type of vehicle.
The police also discovered that the offending limousine had been the subject of an inspection in September and then an injunction from the same Department of Transport, which prohibited Prestige Limousine from using it.
Nauman Hussain’s sentence will be set on May 31. He faces up to 15 years in prison.
