The Limoges Beaubreuil incinerator will disappear by the end of 2029: in replacement, the new installation must be more ecological and will be able to ensure the treatment of waste from 300 municipalities. First published February 8, 2023.
Inaugurated in 1989, the Limoges incineratorwith its unique architecture, has lived.
By the end of 2029, it will be replaced by a new installation with refined standards and which will make it possible to produce more energyas explained by Mathieu Jarry, director in charge of waste prevention and management at Limoges Métropole: “We are going to change to an installation that will be more efficient, which will produce four times more electricity, three times more heat sales. And with ever more efficient smoke treatment.”
In addition, while the Beaubreuil incinerator currently only allows treatment of waste from Limoges, the new equipment will be able to handle waste from 283 communes.
“This is a file that is supported by several players. You have to see the treatment of waste on a global scale and we have succeeded, beyond our political differences, in working in the interest of an entire territory, which is a territory that goes beyond the perimeter of the department of Haute-Vienne alone,” welcomes Guillaume Guérin, president of Limoges-Métropole.
Paradoxically, new equipment should have to deal much less waste than today. Sorting becomes, over time, obvious for all, and being, on the other hand, facilitated. The ambitious objective is a 20% reduction in 2030.
” We encourage more sorting. Sort more packaging and paper to go to the recycling center. But also to sort more bio-waste. Today, in the green bin, a third of the waste is bio-waste, biodegradable, which can be transformed into compost or methane. There are plenty of things to do with,” says Mathieu Jarry.
For this, the establishment of pricing by the number of collections, as is already done in Creuse, or by the weight of the bin, could be generalized. As well as more collections for recyclable waste, and less frequent for the rest.
All this at a price, everyone’s commitment to sorting waste, but more pragmatically, 150 million euros for the new installation.
