The Limburg municipality of Meerssen warns people not to go to a number of nature reserves for the time being. These areas are home to groups of wild boars, which can become aggressive if they feel threatened. A hiker was injured earlier this week.
The warning applies to the nature reserves Kalverbosch, Humcoven, Vliek, Waterfall and Raar. There are also warning signs in those areas to alert nature lovers to the risks.
Wild boars are normally shy. But when they have young piggies or when they feel rushed, they can become aggressive.
Limburg media reported on such a case this week. The victim was taking a walk on Sunday afternoon when he “felt something on his arm”. He also heard a grunting sound. “It turned out to be a wild boar hanging on my arm,” he says 1Limburg.
The man went to the hospital with a heavily bleeding arm, where he received seventeen stitches.
The municipality already warned on Tuesday not to take dogs into the areas anymore. Hikers and cyclists were also “strongly advised” to stay on the trails. A day later, that warning was tightened to “the urgent call” to stay away altogether.
