A light tour will pass through the streets of Valkenburg tonight. In this way, residents, emergency services from all over the country and affected entrepreneurs commemorate the flooding of a year ago.

The lantern tour started at 10 p.m. in Schin op Geul and Houthem. Hikers of both routes come together in the center of Valkenburg.

Mayor Daan Prevoo addressed the participants at the start of the tour in Schin op Geul, where about 150 interested people were present. The light tour is primarily intended as a tribute to all rescuers.

Prevoo asked for a big round of applause for everyone who worked during the flood.

A year ago, parts of Germany, Belgium and Limburg were hit by extreme rainfall. Rivers and streams flooded, including the river Geul in Limburg. Homes and businesses were flooded. More than 200 people were killed in Belgium and Germany.

There had not been such major floods in Limburg for decades. According to the most recent estimate, the damage amounts to 500 million euros.

In some places, the damage has not yet been repaired because victims are still waiting for their money. As a result, people are still dealing with the consequences of the floods on a daily basis.
