There are still an average of 23 Covid-19 infections every day in our province, 6 percent less than a week ago. Twelve Limburg municipalities have been corona-free for at least a week.

From 23 to 29 August, exactly 163 infections occurred in our province, 4 percent less than the week before. The reproduction number in Limburg is 0.989, which means that the virus is losing strength very slowly. In view of the relatively limited number of infections, the R value varies greatly from day to day. A few local outliers are enough to push the average up again.
Although Maasmechelen and Genk remain the most affected municipalities in Limburg with 25 infections on a weekly basis, the increase in Pelt is particularly striking. Last weekend, the merged municipality was still corona-free, but today Sciensano reports 8 infections on Pelt’s territory. “These are isolated cases of returning holidaymakers,” says Mayor Frank Smeets (CD&V). “The infections are limited to a few couples and cannot be linked to each other. Contact research is now being used to determine with whom these people have had close contact. But all in all, the outbreak remains very limited. ”
Throughout Belgium, an average of 438 people still test positive every day (-12 percent). The average number of deaths (4) and hospital admissions (16) also continues to decline by 37 and 26 percent respectively. There are currently 226 corona patients in Belgian hospitals, a fifth less than last week. In Limburg, 8 patients with Covid-19 have been admitted to hospital.
