Limburg carnival associations are angry with the Ministry of Education because students from group 8 will have to take the transfer test during carnival next year. This new final test replaces the cito test.
The transfer test will take place in the first two weeks of February. This coincides with Carnival and the preparations for it.
Chairman Bart Maes of the Samewirkende Limburgse Vastelaovesvereniginge (SLV) wrote an angry letter to education minister Robbert Dijkgraaf on Friday. According to him, the ministry would have asked to move “the event”.
Maes wrote the letter on behalf of the seventeen oldest and largest associations in Limburg. He was outraged: according to him, carnival is not an event but “dynamic intangible heritage that is passed on from generation to generation”.
The letter also mentions that the week before carnival is traditionally filled with all kinds of activities inside and outside the school environment. “In particular, the oldest group of primary school students is strongly involved in carnival,” writes Maes.
Chairman Ad Koopman of the Brabant Carnival Federation BCF also reacted with surprise on Friday. “It is difficult to hold tests at that time. It is again those from above the major rivers who come up with such things. Of course that is not possible.”
A spokesperson says that schools themselves can choose a suitable time for the final test in the first two weeks of February. “Schools need two half-days.”
