Limassol’s seas are clean, unnecessary protest, says the Mayor

The results of laboratory tests, according to which there is no microbiological contamination that affects the quality of the bathing waters, is being made public by the Municipality of Limassol, on the occasion of a protest planned for Saturday by a group of citizens. The protest, which sends wrong messages, is unnecessary, Mayor Nikos Nikolaidis told KYPE.

In a statement, the Municipality of Limassol states that it remains vigilant to safeguard the cleanliness of the sea, which is “perpetually high on our priorities”, while noting that this year a consortium of companies was awarded the contract to provide services to prevent/deal with sea pollution, for the summer season 2023, through open bidding procedures.

The consortium, it is added, offers its services with the use of two vessels, special means and specialized personnel in matters of marine pollution. In particular, one vessel carries out surveillance voyages of the sea area, between the bathers’ limit and the anchorage. The second boat moves with a wheeled vehicle along the coastal road and intervenes to suppress any pollution spots within the bathing area.

With reference to the incidents of the last few days regarding the presence of foam and other stains on the surface of the sea, the Municipality of Limassol notes that officials of the Municipality of Limassol, in collaboration with the joint venture VTS Vassiliko Terminal Services Ltd & VSS EPE Environmental Protection Service Ltd, carried out sampling from the points where the foams and other stains were detected.

The results, the announcement emphasizes, did not show any microbiological contamination affecting the quality of the swimming waters and declares that “the Municipality of Limassol continues the great effort to improve the quality of the sea of Limassol, which deserves to be enjoyed by the people of Limassol and the its visitors and always in consultation with all the other services involved, will try to combat any phenomena of marine pollution from boats in the area”.

Nikos Nicolaidis was asked to comment on the protest planned for tomorrow Saturday, at 9:00 a.m. at KYPE, noting that it is the right of every citizen to protest, however he emphasized that “this protest is unnecessary and I don’t think it adds or offers anything”. .

“On the contrary, it sends a wrong message, that the seas of Limassol are not clean”, he said and added that visitors should come without fear that the waters of the sea of Limassol are not clean.

Analyzes are being carried out, he continued, and daily checks, indicating that the foams detected recently seem to come from marine plants and in any case no microbiological contamination is detected.
