Limassol: Tornado damage, a man was amputated – 2024-02-16 11:04:06

Two tornadoes hit Limassol in the early hours of the morning, causing extensive damage and the amputation of two fingers of a man, who underwent surgery at Nicosia General Hospital.

The damages are huge in houses and properties, the Mayor of Germasogeia Kyriakos Xydias told the Cyprus News Agency. “Trees and stakes of the EAC fell, nurseries were destroyed, windows were broken and tiles were removed from roofs” he said and noted that “what we experienced was unprecedented”.

About 20 roads, according to the mayor, were closed during the night, due to the fall of trees and piles, while on Andokidou Street, a construction site crane gave way and overturned, reports sigmalive.

Panioti Avenue remains closed since the morning and the primary school management has already been informed that the school will remain closed today.

From the first moment, crews from the Municipality, in collaboration with the Civil Defense, the Police, the Fire Service and the District Administration, are in the area to provide assistance.

Mr. Xydias also said that he has contacted the Deputy Ministry of Social Welfare, requesting that accommodation be found for those families who cannot stay in their homes.
