DARMSTADT – The drivers of the Lilien aid convoy had covered around 2400 kilometers and 33 hours by car when they returned to the Böllenfalltor car park on Tuesday. Lilien fans – from Ultra to A-Block – initially had 25,000 euros with them in a short-term campaign Home game against Heidenheim and collected donations. The latter were loaded onto a 7.5-ton truck, two 3.5-ton vans and two minibuses over the weekend to take them to the Polish-Ukrainian border.

The fan project on Erbacher Straße and the car park in front of the stadium collected and sorted. Eventually, food, medicine and other urgently needed relief supplies went on the journey, which were immediately unloaded after their arrival at the Polish border on Monday and distributed further to Ukraine, according to the organizers. Connections to Ukraine exist through close contacts of some Lilien fans with Ukrainian fans of FC Arsenal Kyiv, ex-players from Ukraine and through some family or friends connections.

Great cohesion among lily fans

“The cohesion and the willingness to support us were great,” says Tim Strack from the Lilien fan and funding department. In the end, the convoy came about thanks to the willingness of everyone in Darmstadt to donate. It would not have been possible without the people who donated supplies and money.

In the game against Heidenheim, 16,735 euros were collected and 8,700 euros in cup deposits. The fans say that the 25,435 euros is a new “record donation amount” at Bölle. This was used to buy more relief supplies and finance fuel for the convoy. The rest was donated to the association “Doctors Without Borders”.

Support Darmstadt companies

In addition, the car rental company Nicolay from Rossdorf provided four of the five vehicles free of charge, the moving company Fr. Friedrich donated a number of moving boxes. The medical supply stores Klein and Behrmann not only provided medical equipment such as wheelchairs, but also lend a hand with loading the trucks; Bernd Engel organized medicine and aids. The Darmstadt fan project managed the big rush as a contact point, Lilien fan and member of the Bundestag Philip Krämer (Greens) made sure that the trip was designated as an “official aid transport”. Above all, the SV Darmstadt 1898 association supported the entire fundraising campaign.

“In the coming days and weeks we will consider how we can continue to help and use our community for the benefit of people in need in the crisis area,” the fans said. At the home game against Sandhausen on Friday, for example, funds were raised for Arsenal Kyiv fans. The conflict shows what even smaller groups can do if they stick together, and that “belligerent conflicts always come at a terrible price that we cannot simply ignore in our privileged bubble”.
