Lilibet’s Name Controversy: Queen Elizabeth II’s Anger Over Harry and Meghan’s Choice for Daughter’s Name in “Charles III: New King, New Court” Biography

The issue of Lilibet’s name came to the fore after the publication of Robert Hardman’s royal biography “Charles III: New King, New Court. Inside Story”.

When the second child of the Dukes of Sussex was born, the announcement said that the Dukes had named the baby girl in honor of her great-grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II of Great Britain, whose nickname was Lilibeth throughout her life. The daughter’s middle name, Diana, was chosen in honor of Prince Harry’s mother, Diana, Princess of Wales.

The book “Charles III: New King, New Court. Inside Story” says Queen Elizabeth II was “as angry as anyone has ever seen her” after the Duke and Duchess of Sussex announced that the Queen herself had given her blessing to call their baby daughter Lilibet.

Lilibeth is the queen’s childhood nickname, by which those closest to her continued to call her until the end of her life.

The Daily Mail reports that Elizabeth II told loved ones: “I don’t own palaces, I don’t own paintings, the only thing I own is my name. And now they’ve taken it!”
