The beautiful actress Lilia Maravilla was born in Varna. There she became part of the children’s theater troupe “Cricket”, in which she is with other future stars on the home stage, such as Maria Sapundzhieva, Marius Kurkinski and Nevena Bozukova-Neve. Years later, he and Marius are together again, but this time as students at NATFA in the class of Prof. Krikor Azaryan, Todor Koleva and Elena Baeva.
Lilia’s career started with a bang and in the first year she won a role in Ivan Andonov’s film – “Indian Games”. Here are some more interesting incarnations for the young actress, after which her career suddenly came to a standstill for ten years. The camera loves her again with her roles in the movie Love.net, as well as in the series “Undercover”, “Magna Aura – the Lost City” and “Relationships”.
In 2014, the talented Lilia received “Icarus” – “for leading female role” in the play “Mrs. Minister” at the Sofia Theater. She is the winner of the prestigious award and “for supporting female role”, thanks to her role in “Theater, my love!” by Valeri Petrov.
Here is what Maravilla reveals in an interview with “Labor”.
– Lilia, on April 16 the premiere of Viktor Bozhinov’s long-awaited new film – “The Naked Truth about the Zhiguli Group” will take place. Was it a challenge for you to take on the role of a singer and what else would you reveal about your heroine in the production?
– Yes, the role was a challenge for me, because I am not a singer and everything other than me provokes me to walk a path that my heroine should follow.
I really like my role because it is quite different from me in temperament, character and destiny. It’s a little weirder bird, but it’s very cute. I can say about her that she emigrated to France and is now returning to Bulgaria, but I do not want to tell more to be interesting to viewers.
Great songs were written especially for the film, and Irini Jambonas and I, who are the singers in the group “Zhiguli”, had to take singing lessons, because this is not only learned by watching videos and concerts, but we need detailed work. .
By the way, I have a passion to sing since I was very young, but then I did not go to classes, and only later in the Academy I had the pleasure to teach Yosif Gerdzhikov, who is a great professional and taught us to sing and have an attitude to music.
– Did you quickly work with the other actors in the film to look like a real group on the screen?
– Honestly, the film was a serious job for us, because we really had to feel like a band and live like musicians, and this is a very different life. To this end, all the boys in the film started taking lessons and playing an instrument, because before that only Fitz had more professional training, but he also has a band.
As a child, I also dreamed of playing the piano and begged my mother to buy it for me, but it was so expensive that they could not afford it. At that time, a piano cost 1200 leva, which against the background of his salaries was a cosmic sum and my mother showed me very clearly that this could not happen.
– In this tape you are once again partnering with Mikhail Bilalov. This time, what is the relationship between your characters?
– This time we are not as close as in “Relationships”. (Laughs.) Misho plays the frontman and creator of the group “Zhiguli”, and the rest of us are part of the cast and in the film we have a more unpleasant relationship with him, for which there is a specific reason. It’s nice to be with him again.
I’m used to working with Misho, as well as with Irini. Until now I had not shot with Gero, Fitsata and Rachkov and I had a lot of interesting and fun with them. This company, which was gathered in the film, was very risky, because everyone has a great sense of humor and we were constantly having fun, but by saying: “Camera works” and somehow we managed to be as focused as possible.
The funny thing is that my heroine in the film did something that others can’t forgive her and all my colleagues had taken this to heart so that it was difficult to get out of the role and treat me especially and outside the photos, which was an occasion for many jokes and banter.
– Your fellow student Koyna Ruseva has already made several songs with Miro. Do you like their duets and would you be tempted to record a song together with a native artist? What music charges you and do you like to listen?
– Of course, I’m happy with their duets with Miro. Along with Igor Markovski, many colleagues recorded songs with professional singers, because he started this project, which is terribly cool.
Personally, I have not thought about this issue, but it would certainly be a great challenge for me, because as a professional in my field I still like to be on a level.
In general, I love this art and I like the cliché of good music. I like all the greatest ones – “Earth, Wind and Fire”, Randy Crawford, Barry White, Sting, Phil Collins … These names are a universe and I often sing and dance at home when I listen to them.
– How did the long time without performances on stage affect you?
“Oh, it was hard for me.” I can’t hide that in the beginning I needed a break because I was terribly busy – tours, performances, trips every day, but that’s not something I complain about because it keeps you in shape.
I really rested for the first few weeks, but then I felt like I could freak out – I was worried about what was happening to us; I feel sorry for everyone, for the young, for the adults, for our generation, because these are almost two years in which we lack a normal life.
– Some of your colleagues admit that their generation was lost in the years of transition. Do you sometimes feel this way, even though you enjoy a successful career?
– Of course I have this feeling. That’s why I like the Zhiguli film so much, because it deals with this very topic and I have a feeling that many people who watch it will recognize themselves in these situations and relationships. Our generation really started with many dreams like any young person, but somehow we lost them along the way, we lost ourselves, and the years went by …
As they grew, we were still young people inside us, hoping that our moment would come. Sometimes I found it funny when I heard it commented that a young man in his 50s had made his first film – in our country people in their 50s are commented as young people who are starting now!
Around the world, people of these years have trials, failures, successes and what not, and it is difficult for us to be given this opportunity for realization and it is very sad. Some even left so young and still unfinished for what they were meant to be, but this is life, we had to become a little or more philosophers.
You are trying here to cope somehow on a regional level and to preserve values, to cultivate them and to pass them on to these young people who come to you – to give them hope and to help them along the way. Provided it doesn’t happen to us, at least to them.
– Your daughter Paola has already followed in your footsteps and is a student at NATFA. If you have to compare your generation and hers – which differences are most striking?
– They are much different and freer than us. I’ve heard people say they were so insensitive. It is not true – they are sensitive, but they are different from us and thank God. It is good that they do not have limits for impossible things, as it was with us and they feel part of the world.
However, it has not become easier for them, and the challenges they face are just as difficult, but they have very open senses – I love and like young people. I see how different they are as a generation, but I can’t say that my daughter thinks very differently from me, yet I am the person who raises her.
I am very happy for her, I have taught her respect for what she does and strives for, as well as for the people who teach her and for the path she has to take.
– How do you explain that even the undeniable success of Maria Bakalova, instead of uniting us as a nation, divided us again and there were many opposing comments?
– This is not something that may surprise me, because it is so all over the world. I am rather sad, because in this situation, in which we are all closed and many people started practicing on Facebook on this occasion, and great extremes occurred.
Especially if you don’t know how to express yourself and defend something, but you do it in the dumbest way possible, it becomes very unpleasant. On both sides, the arguments are mainly insults, because even people who wanted to preserve Maria Bakalova’s honor found themselves in a situation where they insulted their opponents.
There is a lack of upbringing, empathy, emotional sensitivity and the ability to treat others the way you want them to treat you. Honestly, it burdens me. I wish Maria to grab the statuette, but even if that doesn’t happen, she is already in the league of the best and has such a long way to go.
“Your husband is Italian.” What is his favorite role?
– He likes me everywhere, but maybe “Mrs. Minister” is his favorite. In fact, working on a role and unwillingly starting to live like this person, especially in the rehearsal process, so he lives with so many heroines that he immediately recognizes them on stage. (Laughing.)
– Does Luka have the credit for becoming more beautiful over the years and what is the best compliment he has given you?
– Exactly that he also tells me that I have no reason to worry that the number of years is increasing, because now I looked much better than when I was younger. Honestly, I’m very pleased to hear it from him, but what you wear inside is also important, because it also affects the way you look and your behavior.
– You were a student in the class of Prof. Krikor Azaryan. Which of his words or lessons do you remember most often?
– I will not hide that I am happy to have graduated with Prof. Azaryan. He was our teacher and guru who taught us a taste for theater, for art, for life and for respect and reverence for the people who have done something. These are the main lessons I observe in all my colleagues, because we all profess the Coco religion and we love it terribly.
From him I remembered that the actor must be like a curious child and be able to keep this purity in himself. Another thing I learned from him is that when he started discussing our game and always started with the good things – then he could hit you with the ground, but this was a constructive criticism that makes you ambitious.
– Does prayer help you?
– Yes, it helps me, because I really look for humility in myself, which is very important for me to do my job well. For anything in life, I always rely a lot on the inner, spiritual world and the connection with it.
I try to be very dignified and responsible here on earth while I am given this opportunity – with humility, good feelings, thoughts and a desire to help so that the world, which is our mirror, can bring us back in the same way and to us.
