Like Valve Masks, These 2 Types Of Masks Can Be The Cause Of Corona Transmission

Jakarta

Recently there has been a commotion varian Omicron which has spread to 9 countries, including Hong Kong. The first patient to be exposed to the Omicron variant, said the University of Hong Kong microbiologist Yuwn Kwok Yung, spread the virus by wearing a valve mask.

The reason is, a respiratory expert from the Friendship Lung Hospital, Dr. Agus Dwi Susanto, Sp P(K) also said that valve masks are actually dangerous if used.

“The valve mask is the breath of the wearer coming out, so if the wearer of the valve mask is sick with COVID-19, then the air that comes out of the valve is mask endanger the surroundings, so it is not recommended,” said Dr Agus Dwi Susanto, Sp P(K), to detikHealth, Saturday (27/11/2021).

Apparently not only valve masks, here are a series of masks that are not recommended by experts because they are not effective in preventing the transmission of COVID-19.

1. Non-cotton cloth masks

Some time ago, a pulmonary specialist at the Friendship Hospital, Dr. Diah Handayani, SpP, appealed to residents not to wear cloth masks with materials other than cotton. The criteria for cotton masks that are safe for daily use have three layers of cotton, because they have tight pores.

On the other hand, Dr Diah explained that cloth masks that use other materials generally don’t have pores as tight as cotton. dr Diah also warned of cloth masks with many folds.

“Because every indentation can accommodate germs from outside, so it must be kept clean,” he said.

2. Mask buff

The University of Duke conducted an analysis of how effectively 14 types of masks protect themselves from exposure to COVID-19. Their study shows that the buff masks that motorcyclists often wear are a type of mask the most ineffective, because it cannot hold droplets when speaking.

“We attribute this to … textiles breaking down large particles into many smaller particles,” said Dr Martin Fischer, chemist, physicist and study author.

Experts say wearing a buff mask can increase the risk of transmitting COVID-19 because more droplets are not filtered. In fact, the buff mask material is said to be able to break down droplets into smaller particles.

3. Exhaust mask or valve mask

Valve masks linked to transmission varian Omicron In Hong Kong, its use has been banned since 2020. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) issued an appeal to ban this valve mask for a number of reasons.

The type of valve mask, emphasized by the CDC, makes people who wear it even transmit the virus, exiting through the valve opening.

“Masks with valves or breathing vents should NOT be worn to help prevent people wearing masks from spreading COVID-19 to others,” the CDC wrote on its website.
