Like the United StatesTraveling to the UK will no longer be possible without permission
Planning to take a trip to the UK? To be able to enter the territory, it will be necessary, in the future, a travel authorization – as is already the case for the United States.
If you have ever been to the United States, you surely remember the procedure which consists in filling out the electronic form ESTA (Electronic System for Travel Authorization) before entering the territory. In future, the UK will also apply this method for visa-free countries – including travelers from Switzerland.
If you plan to travel to the United Kingdom, you will need to complete the electronic travel authorization form ETA (Electronic Travel Authorization) before your departure.
Whether for a weekend, for professional reasons, as part of a language stay or medical care, you will need to present the document to enter the territory. The maximum duration of stay should not exceed 6 months. Beyond this period, a visa will be required.
How to get ETA?
Despite the additional constraint that this implies, the ETA process is intended to be simple: a few days before entering the territory, you will have to complete the online form by filling in the data appearing on your biometric identity document, an address valid e-mail address, a payment card to pay the fees and your travel information. Your request will be reviewed within 48-72 hours.
The advantage is that once you arrive on British soil, there will be no need to pass an additional check. It will suffice to scan his identity document, since all the data will already be registered in the system.
Improving border controls
The introduction of electronic travel authorization is part of the UK government’s plan to make border crossing fully digital by the end of 2025. According to UK Home Secretary Suella Braverman, the new The ETA system should provide the government with more accurate information on migration, improve border controls and make the UK an even safer destination. According to the British government, the ETA system should be in place at the beginning of 2023 and be fully operational by the end of the year.
