After Le Havre, Caen. The capital of Calvados will soon be officially a candidate for the solicitation launched by the government in favor of collective transport on a clean site (TCSP). Since 2008, the State has been supporting local authority projects by co-financing them through calls for projects.
From 150 to 200 million
The most recent, endowed with 450 million euros, was launched on December 15, 2020 for the submission of applications by the end of April. It is therefore necessary to act quickly for the cities interested, either by the creation of line (s), or by the development of new lines, which is the case for Caen.
“We will be ready”, confirm Joël Bruneau, mayor of Caen and president of the Urban Community of Caen la mer, and Nicolas Joyau, deputy mayor and vice-president of Caen la mer. Until this call for projects, the community had not yet made its choice between tramway and High Service Level Bus (BRT). “We accelerated our studies to answer them. It will be the tram because we have regained the financial capacity to reinvest, ten years after our first loan, ”continue the two elected officials.
This time, after a north-south route of 16 km with its three lines serving, in particular, all university campuses, an east-west line will be completed by 2028. The Chemin-Vert districts and the municipality Saint-Contest but also Beaulieu (Zenith and Ornano football stadium) and the municipality of Bretteville-sur-Odon would be served in the future project. “Different routes are being studied for an estimated budget of between 150 and 200 million euros”, calculates Nicolas Joyau. The expected state contribution would be “between 15 and 20 million euros,” adds the mayor. The final route is scheduled for the end of 2023.
Breakdowns and incidents
Historically, Caen had a tramway since 2002. However, this one, also called TVR (Transport on reserved lane) was a vehicle on tires guided by a rail (the only one in France with Nancy) which suffered, during the fifteen years of its activity, many breakdowns and incidents.
On December 31, 2017, it had to be interrupted before its end and a new mode of transport started up again, this time on rail. For this, the entire infrastructure was destroyed and rebuilt with a new platform equipped with new rails on the entire line, inaugurated in July 2019 for an amount of 280 million euros.
