Half as much. There were 600 participants in the UNSS departmental cross-country this Wednesday, November 20 at the Beauvais park in Romorantin, compared to 1,300 last year for the same event in Montrichard.
“Compared to the economic situation, we could not afford to take 1,000 students,” explains Christophe Atry, departmental director of the UNSS.
“The objective of the UNSS is to involve as many students as possible”
The economic situation is due to inflation in recent years, notably with the cost of transport which has increased, but also to that of the National School Sports Union which is in deficit. In a survey published on November 6, the daily The team highlighted the abuses in the financial management of the UNSS.
PE teachers, like Gil Boissé in Vendôme and elected to the UNSS board of directors, regret that it is the students, in the first place, who pay the price. “I am sorry and disappointed by what we have just learned. We have half as many students this year in the departmental cross country because we cannot finance it. However, the objective of the UNSS is to involve as many students as possible. »
A comment shared by her colleague Catherine Tessier who wore two posters on her backpack this Wednesday on which we could read: “UNSS money for our students” and “200,000 euros and 68,000 for a book and no money to run the districts, a shame!” ».
The PE teacher regrets: “Every year this cross is a celebration, we are unhappy. But once again, we will fight for our students”.
Rain and hail at the end of the day
Because all these considerations aside, the cross country took place and the approximately 600 students from Loir-et-Cher took part in this “key event of the start of the school year”as Christophe Atry calls it, in a “UNSS spirit”. On the edge of the muddy paths of the Beauvais park, the students, wearing the colors of their establishment, encouraged each other by shouting. “Don’t let him pass you!” Come on, it’s almost over! »
First under the sun for the women’s races, the cross country ended in the rain and even hail, forcing the organizers to group the last two races, namely those of the cadets and juniors. And it was in particularly difficult conditions that the last runners set off, some slipping, losing their bib, or even their shoes in the mud. One participant even crossed the finish line, basketball in hand.
If for some, the objective of this cross was above all the participation, even the discovery, of the race, for others, the issue was indeed sporting. The key to these departmentals is a qualification for the regional championship which will be held on December 4 in Saran. With this year an obligation of parity in the teams with three girls and three boys.
