Birger Meling and Rennes took a really big scalp when they beat the PSG stars on Sunday afternoon.
RENNES – PARIS SAINT-GERMAIN 2-0:
Paris Saint-Germain had a full pot in Ligue 1 after eight games of the season, but in Sunday’s meeting against Rennes, the big club went on a real bang.
Birger Meling and his Rennes shocked PSG when they took the lead just before the break with Gaetan Laborde. The Norwegian was involved in the scoring and was third last on the ball.
Rennes went down the throat of the star team right after the break and increased the lead after just a few seconds of the inning, when Flavien Tait put the ball easily in goal.
Thus, it was a very surprising, but also deserved victory for Rennes on Sunday afternoon.
– Weak endings
Rennes impressed throughout the match, and created great problems for the big club. But PSG also wasted a lot of their chances, especially in the first half.
Both Mbappé and Neymar abused enormous opportunities, something Direktesport commentator Robin Haugen reacted to during the match.
– Have you seen? They miss great opportunities here PSG. It’s a terrible ending. There are simply weak endings from Mbappé and Neymar, was commentator Haugen’s verdict on the superstars’ lack of chances.
In addition to this, Messi had a free kick in the crossbar and Mbappé had a goal canceled out for offside in the second half.
– The performance today is simply really awkward, Haugen concluded.
– It is a small sensation, writes French RMC about the match.
Energetic opening
The fight at Roazhon Park started very entertaining, and it swung back and forth all the time. Among other things, Meling was very active offensively from his back position, in an opening quarter with a very high tempo.
As PSG took over more and more of the match, there were also more big chances.
At half-time in the first half, Neymar suddenly got the ball in his legs at six meters, but the Brazilian blew the ball up in the stands.
– There you have to score Neymar. Should the host get something better than that, commented Robin Haugen.
Shortly afterwards, it was Mbappé who came to a huge opportunity. Messi played a brilliant pass through to the Frenchman, who had to finish from a fine position. The ending, however, was of the cruel kind, and went far beyond.
After about half an hour played, PSG got a free kick from around 25 meters, and Messi lined up. Then it usually becomes dangerous, and this was no exception.
The Argentine’s free kick was brilliant, but it went in the crossbar and down.
– It will not happen for Messi. He can hardly get any closer to these free kicks.
Rennes shocked PSG
PSG continued to create dangers throughout the round, but just before the break, the ball suddenly set in goal for the home team.
Meling played the ball to Sulemana who hit a brilliant cross into the box. There, the league’s top scorer Gaetan Laborde was ready, and he kept up with a fantastic finish in the far corner, and Rennes took the lead.
– They shock Pochettino and PSG. A fantastic finish and a sparkling post, commentator Haugen exclaimed after the score.
In the second half, it hurt worse for the star gallery of PSG. For Rennes went straight to the throat at PSG, and increased the lead after just a few seconds of the inning.
Laborde got the ball on the right side and put in hard in front of goal. There, Flavien Tait was all alone, and easily put in Rennes’ second goal. The score was checked by VAR, but it remained standing.
Rennes ‘two-goal lead increased the PSG stars’ frustration, but they eventually got to some useful chances in the second half as well.
With 68 minutes played, Mbappé had a fantastic opportunity to reply but his shot flew harmlessly into the side-netting of the goal.
Messi tried a free kick towards the end of the match, but the ball struck the crossbar.
And with less than ten minutes left, the referee awarded a penalty to Rennes, but after the referee was out checking on the monitor, the penalty kick was reversed.
PSG pressed until the referee blew the whistle for the last time, but never came closer to scoring. Thus, it was a shock victory for Rennes.
