LIGUE 1, Jonathan David | This special mark attracted attention. An emotional story lies behind

The young top scorer never made it home to say goodbye to his late mother. Now he pays tribute to her in a beautiful way.

Canadian Jonathan David (21) has taken Ligue 1 by storm after the transfer from Ghent in Belgian football to Lille almost a year and a half ago.

David first contributed with 13 goals in the first season 2020-21, which ended with a sensational league gold for Lille. This season, the striker already has twelve goals in 19 games in the first half, and is the French top division’s top scorer.

A few days ago, David decided the away match against Bordeaux when he put in 3-2 for Lille six minutes before full time.

In the jubilation scenes that followed, the 21-year-old made a name for himself with an eye-catching goal celebration. With a rose in his hand, David raised both his arm and his gaze to the sky, before kissing the rose.

Heartbreaking experience

The TV channel RMC Sport reveals that the gesture was dedicated to the young boy’s deceased mother, Rose, who died of cancer in December two years ago.

David had received permission from employer Ghent to go home at the time, after being informed of his mother’s deteriorating health. He had not yet finished his teens when he boarded the plane to get home to Ottawa.

But the young great talent did not reach further than a stopover in London before his mother unfortunately passed away. Rose was buried on December 14, 2019.

16 days after his mother’s death, Jonathan David was back on the field for Ghent. He contributed with a goal-scoring pass when the team equalized in the tough match against the big team Club Brugge. The match ends 1-1.

Before the start of the match, David received a long round of applause from supporters at Ghelamco Arena in Ghent. They were very grateful that he had returned to them, even before the league took a break during the Christmas holidays.

In the summer of 2020, David was sold to French football and Lille for 30 million euros. He spent a couple of months scoring his first goal there, but the period that has passed since then has already been described.

Connects to Spain and England

The 21-year-old is now one of the hottest players in the transfer market. As a young top scorer, in a league as strong and star-studded as Ligue 1, he has naturally become a far more well-known profile in Football Europe.

David’s player agent, Nick Mavromaras, recently came out with a clear message that this season will be the last in Lille for the highest scoring player. According to Mavromaras, the leagues in England or Spain are most interesting for the Little striker.

In recent days, a number of reports have appeared about interested big clubs. Real Madrid are among them.

Robin Haugen comments on French football for Direktesport.no and Nettavisen, among others. He has no doubt that the 21-year-old is good enough for a giant on the football map as those dressed in white in the Spanish capital.

– Jonathan David has good finishing skills with both legs. Physics is his great strength. He has an insane pace and is difficult to reach. He can also be used on the edges. In terms of skills, I definitely think David has what it takes to do well in Real Madrid, Haugen told Nettavisen recently.

– He’s right up there

However, the commentator envisions that Real Madrid has even bigger attack profiles in the binoculars. As is well known, one of the most in demand is a well-known Norwegian of the same age.

– I think they would much rather go “all in” for Erling Braut Haaland or Kylian Mbappé. It’s probably a lot about how much money they have the opportunity to spend. David has enormous potential, so he is right up there as a backup solution if Haaland or Mbappé is not landed.

Haugen also points out that the Canadian can be a cheaper signing for Real Madrid, although Mbappé seems to be able to leave PSG without a transfer fee after this season. He justifies this with salary expenses, which will probably be a little lower for a player like Jonathan David.

English clubs such as Arsenal, West Ham and Liverpool have also been linked with David.

The links gained new momentum after the agent’s recent outbursts about the Premier League or La Liga as likely next stops.
