“I received a message from the director of the festival and he said: your idea has been adopted, Frans”

Heijn himself was the one who suggested turning on the lights in the morning as well. “My proposal was: why not in the morning? I even suggested to do it from 5 a.m. And then I received a message from the director of the festival and he said: your idea has been adopted, Frans.”

Audience Favorites

The observant festival visitor will notice that many of these creations are not being seen for the first time around and above the canals. Because of the second anniversary, this year the public favorites from the past editions can be seen.

Within the family of four that sails along on Thursday morning, opinions differ about what the most beautiful work of art is. “I found The Ghost Ship the most beautiful”, says one of them. His sister has a different opinion. “I thought The Whole Hole” the coolest”, she says about the work of art that you pass under a bridge, as it were. They do agree on one thing: “Several works of art were very beautiful.”

Heijn will sail through the city every day at 07:00 with visible enthusiasm, but he doesn’t have to do it for the money. “Financially you shouldn’t do it. But A: I think it’s a shame, because it’s all already built up. If we don’t go sailing now, there will be no Light Festival next year. And B: I think it will be something for the 800,000 Amsterdammers beauty is to be enjoyed.”

You can enjoy this until January 23. The lights of all creations are on from 7am to 9am and 3pm to 5pm daily.
