The metropolis of New York has officially started the festival season. More than 50,000 colored lights were lit on what is probably the world’s most famous Christmas tree at Rockefeller Center.

Last year the traditional kindling took place without an audience due to the corona pandemic. This year spectators were again allowed to be on site in Manhattan – but with capacity restrictions. Music stars such as Carrie Underwood, Rob Thomas and Norah Jones appeared on the show, which was also televised live on Wednesday night.

The lighting of the lights on the tree in front of Rockefeller Center, which has been celebrated annually since the early 1930s, is one of the most popular New York Christmas traditions.

This year’s tree is a 25 meter high spruce from the state of Maryland. At the top of the tree sits a 400 kilogram star by star designer Daniel Libeskind. Previously, the German artist Michael Hammers was responsible for the star for many years.
