Lightcycle Morph – Dyson’s magic lamp costs at least 549 euros

With the Lightcycle Morph, Dyson is launching a new generation of lamps: The luminaire should not only be versatile, serve with different light colors, shine for customers while sleeping – this luminaire is also extremely sustainable, Dyson promises. With a lifespan of 60 years, most buyers can assume that the piece of furniture will be passed on to the children.

The price is also typical of Dyson: the technical marvel costs at least 549 euros. That is the price for the small desk model, with the stand the fun costs 749 euros. After all, the lamp is available in three colors – without any additional charges.

The Lightcycle Morph can be adapted to different purposes. Of course, the device serves as a reading lamp, you can use it as a spot and, as a special feature, you can dock the light head on the stand tube and then get a candle-like mood light. In our opinion, this is the biggest peculiarity – and a little disappointment. Ultimately, it is not the light emitted by the LEDs that colors, but the plastic cover makes the special light. So Omis lampshades have already made the bright light bulbs look cozy.

Different light colors

You can choose between presets such as studying, relaxing, boosting and waking up, or you can choose from 20 different light settings. In addition, the morph automatically adjusts the light temperature to the time. The proportion of blue is reduced in the evening, which should enable a better night’s sleep. Of course, Grandma’s lampshade couldn’t do that. In addition, the morph has a USB-C connection and monitors the environment with a motion sensor so that it switches off automatically.

The fact that you can let the Lightcycle Morph shine against the wall or ceiling, as Dyson proudly reports, in order to achieve indirect illumination is actually nothing special. Like the Lightcycle already presented, the morph lamp is equipped with Dyson’s so-called heat pipe technology. This cooling is intended to protect the LEDs from discoloration and to give them the mentioned lifespan of 60 years.

Also not more expensive than designer lamps

The Lightcycle Morph is the most flexible lamp from Dyson. In terms of price, the lamp is clearly outside the Ikea class, but is also not noticeably more expensive than designer lamps from specialist shops. It is debatable whether 60 years stand for sustainability here. Given the advances in lighting technology and “smart homes” as a whole, it can be said that all lamps on offer today will become obsolete before the lifespan of 60 years. Even USB-C will certainly not be the standard for 60 years. It is doubtful whether Dyson customers of all people will honor an ancient device for another 40 years.

It is also incomprehensible that the lamp can only be controlled via the Dyson app and cannot be integrated into other solutions. It will not work in the long run. Because even if the Dyson brand brings a lot of prestige with it, the smart home fan will not accept the fiddling that comes when every device in the house needs its own app. The enormous variety speaks in favor of the lamp – there is hardly a task that it cannot make use of.
