On Christmas Eve, Saturday, December 23, four musicians from Liepāja are invited to their only Christmas concert “Light Songs of Dark Nights” at the “Viestistaba” concert venue of “Pegaza pagalma”.
Two of them are known as musicians of the Liepāja Symphony Orchestra – Kārlis Catlaks is the orchestra’s clarinetist, clarinet group concertmaster and orchestra inspector, Jānis Ivuškāns – the orchestra’s trumpeter, composer, arranger and creator of various musical projects. On the other hand, the two younger ones, who are not so experienced, can safely stand next to them in terms of talent, and they are Gregors Jānis Mažis, vocalist, guitarist, composer and video artist, who is also connected with the symphony orchestra, because he provides its live broadcasts, while Tabita Balode, also known as Tipa, is a promising young singer-songwriter.
The December 23 concert “Pegaza pagalma” in the living room will be the occasion when one of them – Kārlis Catlaks – once threatened the other – Gregor Jānis Mažim, that “the time will come when we will play together!”.
The portal irliepaja.lv asked Kārli Catlak and Gregor Jānis Maži to tell what and why the quartet will play on December 23.
Gregors Jānis Mažis: – There are a lot of Christmas concerts in December, all you have to do is choose your favorite artist, dress up nicely and go listen. There is nothing wrong with these concerts, but what we want to achieve is to get that beautiful feeling of a living room – when we have all gathered together as a family to sit by the fireplace on the eve of the holiday, to create a feeling of well-being for ourselves and the audience. And, most importantly, there should not be musicians and the audience, but musicians with the audience.
Kārlis Catlaks: – The very beginning was around August – the time when you think about Christmas (laughs). I have such a thing – somewhere between St. John’s Day and August, the idea that I should listen to one of my favorite Christmas albums comes to my mind. It’s pretty funny, but I usually think of him in the summer. I listened and realized that I should make a Christmas project, which is a little different from my daily work in the orchestra – a sincere and simple concert, where you and others can catch the feeling of Christmas, the smell of gingerbread and everything else that we associate with Christmas.
One warm summer day, while sitting in the “Pegaza yard”, I talked with Jānis Ivuškans, and we decided that we should make a concert that is interesting for us, where we are surrounded by our loved ones and to which others who want to can also come.
Gregors Jānis Mažis: – At the concert, we will be together friends and colleagues who have also worked together before, but in a slightly different way – I have been with Kārli and Jānis in live broadcasts of orchestra concerts, played together with Jānis, with Tabitha also, only in a different way, and now it all comes together in a new bouquet of flavors.
Kārlis Catlaks: – It will definitely not be work, but a warm evening where we want to bring joy not only to ourselves, but also to others. In the concert, there will be no reworkings of huge opus for a small ensemble. There will be really well-known Christmas tunes, some not so Christmas or not so well-known, but in any case, those that are associated with a romantic Christmas evening by the fireplace.
And in this concert, perhaps I will play not only the clarinet, and not only Tabitha and Gregors Jānis will sing.
