Salzburg – Scouts from Austria received the peace light from Bethlehem in Salzburg Cathedral on Saturday. Scouts from other countries were only there online this time due to Corona. Especially in the difficult time of the pandemic, the light from Bethlehem as a sign of consolation, hope and love is all the more necessary, said Salzburg Archbishop Franz Lackner.
Ignited in the grotto of Jesus’ birth
The light of peace was lit about three weeks ago by the Bethlehem student Maria Khoury in the grotto of Jesus’ birth. It was flown from Tel Aviv to Linz and received by Governor Thomas Stelzer and ORF Regional Director Kurt Rammerstorfer. Now Austrian scouts will bring it from Salzburg to the borders of the country, where it will be picked up by partner organizations or private individuals and taken on.
According to the organizers, the light of peace should at least be carried through Europe. It should therefore not be spread overseas this year. Central peace light celebrations with the light of the previous year have already taken place in the USA and Argentina.

“We heroically proclaim the peace of the Lord”
The motto of the celebration in Salzburg was “We heroically proclaim the peace of the Lord”. The light has been lit annually in Bethlehem since 1986 and initially brought to an Austrian city by the Austrian Broadcasting Corporation (ORF). Usually scouts from more than 20 European countries receive it there.
