Light at the end of the tunnel: COVID-19 drug research is already in Kaunas

In the Intensive Care Unit of Kaunas Clinics, treatment is difficult COVID-19 sick patients. They all need oxygen and constant care. COVID-19 drugs are a source of hope for the reduction of coronavirus-critical patients.

Clinical trials of the drug developed in Austria begin in Kaunas clinics.

“The drug developers are an Austrian pharmaceutical company, the drug is not completely new, it has already been tested in several clinical trials. The last one took place in France, where 50 patients were admitted, ”commented the anesthesiologist of Kaunas clinics, resuscitator Vilma Traškaitė-Juškevičienė.

The doctor says the first trials of the drug abroad are encouraging. Coronavirus damages blood vessels by making them porous, and this medicine allows them to remain intact.

“It significantly reduces the damage to the endothelium – the inner layer of the vascular wall and its permeability and improves the patient’s outcome,” explained V. Traškaitė-Juškevičienė.

Although few people have received the drug, it is likely to be safe to use.

“This medicine is not inferior in safety to other similar medicines used in other studies. This means that it is just as safe and does not cause any side effects, ”commented Kaunas Clinic Physician.

30 patients from Kaunas clinics will participate in the study voluntarily. They will be given an experimental drug for a few days.

“The most important criterion for a patient to have COVID-19 disease is moderate disease – he should already be treated in the hospital, in the Therapy Department, but not yet in the Intensive Care Unit,” said V. Traškaitė-Juškevičienė.

The study will last 3 years in Kaunas, 8 more EU countries will take part in it. Respondents in Kaunas say they would like to ask if they would agree to use the newly developed drugs.

“I don’t even know, it’s scary for everyone here now. Not taking it – it will be bad, taking it – maybe it will be even worse. And what do you do? Who can answer? What can be trusted? ”Commented the Kaunas resident.

“It simply came to our notice then. Maybe those who are afraid of vaccines will have at least some alternative, ”said the man interviewed by LNK.

“(Medicines) should be well researched afterwards, if they really help and there are no significant side effects,” commented the Kaunas resident.

“It simply came to our notice then. And vaccinations have saved the world many times … Maybe, you know, I would use them, ”said another Kaunas resident.

Doctors say that as long as there is no official drug, people seek the kind of treatment they know. Often – and surprising doctors.

“Worm medicines. Maybe they give it to the dog, then get sick of the fight and start using it themselves. There was further talk of hydroxychloroquine not being used. As I said, do not take dexamethasone in any way yourself, ”said the pharmacologist of Kaunas Clinics Simona Stankevičiūtė.

Scientists say a bright light will be seen at the end of the pandemic tunnel with the first drugs.

“It is possible to cope with the struggle at the moment and it could be a way out of the stalemate, from the opposition, if the Government starts to make every effort to purchase these drugs,” said Rimas Jonas Jankūnas, associate professor at the Institute of Physiology and Pharmacology.

The first COVID-19 tablet was developed by the American company Merck. The tablet has already been approved and authorized in the United Kingdom. The European Medicines Agency has promised to officially allow Merck to treat coronavirus within a few weeks.

Pfizer is awaiting approval from the United States Food and Drug Administration for a 90% effective coronavirus tablet.
