Liga MX Femenil begins to take its first steps (Liga MX Femenil)
The professional women’s soccer league is relatively new in the countrycelebrated just six years of its creation. It emerged in December 2016 on the initiative of the Mexican Football Federation (FMF) and with the official name of Liga MX Femenil.
In its first tournament, held in 2017, all Liga MX teams participated with their women’s version, except for two teams: Chiapas and Puebla, who were unable to put together a team due to their financial problems.
It was not until the following year, in 2018, that the Liga MX Femenil was able to play like the men’s version does, that is, with 18 teams.
Just like the men’s edition, the Liga Femenil MX plays two short tournaments a year. To date, eight competitions have been held with their respective leagues.
The first team to be crowned champions in the history of the Liga MX Femenil was Chivas de Guadalajarawhile The team that has won the most titles is Tigres de la UANLwith five trophies.
As the Liga Femenil MX tournaments progress, their exposure in traditional media, as well as on social media, increases. In 2020, the Liga Femenil MX broke records in audience levels, while in 2021 the first foreign players arrived.
