Kuala Lumpur –
Prime Minister (PM) Malaysia, Muhyiddin Yassin, was accused of treason and forced to resign. The push for resignation arose after the King of Malaysia, Al-Sultan Abdullah, condemned the government of PM Muhyiddin for misleading parliament about the lifting of emergency rules corona virus (COVID-19).
PM Muhyiddin led a scandal-ridden governing coalition that came to power last year without an election, but his government is now on the verge of collapse after his coalition allies withdrew support.
This week, Malaysia’s parliament convened a special session after months of recess under the Corona state of emergency, which critics have imposed on Prime Minister Muhyddin in order to retain power without a majority in parliament.
As reported AFP, Thursday (29/7/2021), the Minister of Legal Affairs announced that the Corona emergency period ended on August 1 and a number of emergency rules implemented during the pandemic have been cancelled.
Malaysian lawmakers from the opposition were angry and accused PM Muhyiddin of simply wanting to avoid debate in parliament. They also stressed whether the King of Malaysia or Malaysia’s Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Al-Sultan Abdullah, had approved the repeal of the emergency rule, as provided for in the Federal Constitution.
On Thursday (29/7) local time, the State Palace confirmed that Al-Sultan Abdullah did not give his approval for the lifting of the emergency rule and expressed ‘great disappointment’ with PM Muhyddin’s government.
Istana Negara called the government’s decision to revoke the emergency rule without the Malaysian King’s permission “inaccurate and confused MPs”. It is unusual for Malaysia’s highly respected King in the Muslim-majority country to speak openly in a loud voice against the government.
