Egyptian Court sentenced Mahmud Ezzat, the group’s top leader, to life in prison The Muslim Brotherhood which has been banned. The sentence was handed down after he was found guilty of “terrorism”, the state-run Al-Ahram newspaper reported.
“The Cairo Criminal Court on Thursday (8/4) sentenced Mahmud Ezzat, the interim supreme leader The Muslim Brotherhood who were declared terrorists, with life imprisonment on charges of murder and terrorism, “the newspaper said as reported by the news agency AFP, Friday (9/4/2021).
Ezzat was arrested in August 2020 in Cairo, after having been on the run for several years.
The 76-year-old was found guilty of “inciting to kill” and “supplying weapons” during clashes between demonstrators outside the headquarters of the Muslim Brotherhood in 2013, said a court source, who also confirmed the sentence.
In 2015, Ezzat was sentenced to death in absentia, as well as life in prison, after being found guilty of overseeing the killings of soldiers and government officials.
He is accused of being involved in the murder of state prosecutor Hisham Barakat, who died in hospital after a car bomb hit his convoy in Cairo in 2015.
The Muslim Brotherhood was banned in Egypt in 2013, months after the military toppled President Mohamed Morsi, who came from the movement.
