Alarming data about the interest of Bulgarians between the ages of 25 and 64 in lifelong learning are shown by the latest Eurostat data. Last year, the number of people who participated in a different form of education decreased to only 1.4%, which is almost ten times less than the rest of the EU countries, statistics show.

Sweden leads the ranking – nearly 40% of respondents in this age group have chosen to study, regardless of their advancing years.

Will the trend reverse in Bulgaria?

According to experts, it is worrying that the number of people who decide to get more knowledge continues to decrease every year. In some schools, the average success rate of BEL graduates is below “average”. And half of 15-year-olds are below the line of functional illiteracy in mathematics, according to the international study PISA, reports bTV.

“Lifelong learning is recognized by the state as a priority. But still the measures that are taken are aimed at direct employment creation and less at learning. Most people want to learn in principle, but do not find the time to do so. The financial part is also a problem, as well as the need for transport,” explains Zornitsa Ivanova from IPI.

Many of the graduates of a certain specialty decide to retrain after a while. In addition to the constant interest in computer courses, there is also an increased demand for pastry and cooking lessons.
