Lifelong for American tourists who killed cop in Rome | Abroad

The older of the two men, both from the state of California, confessed to stabbing the cop in July 2019 when the pair went out together in Rome. The officer is said to have been stabbed 11 times with a knife nearly 20 centimeters long. The younger man did not hold the knife himself, but he would have helped hide the weapon. As a result, he is equally guilty of the agent’s death under Italian law.

Brutal attack

Prosecutors spoke of a brutal attack for no immediate cause. The men themselves claimed that they were acting in self-defense. According to them, they were approached from behind by men they believed were dealing with a drug deal earlier in the evening. The pair had bought drugs earlier that night, but the dealer is said to have scammed them. The Americans stole the dealer’s bag, which contained valuables. When the seller could not get his bag back, he called in the police.

When the men faced the two agents, they would have thought it was the dealer or his associates. The judge did not believe this defense. The officer who was also with the incident said that they approached the men from the front and identified themselves as police, and the two went on the attack.

The perpetrators have received the most severe punishment in Italy. After 21 years, they can claim parole, provided they have shown good behavior in the previous time.
