Lifelines is investigating corona infections in 500 households in the Northern Netherlands

For example, the researchers are looking at whether the family members have corona antibodies. Because if so, they may have had the virus without realizing it.

The Lifelines study has been running for months, says professor of genetics Lude Franke of the UMCG. “We have been following participants intensively since the start of the corona crisis. We have now sent them a questionnaire 19 times and asked them whether they had complaints that could be associated with a corona infection. This information, together with the data from the serological research provides new insights into infections in households. “

For example, the researchers have already found places on the DNA that can cause people to become seriously ill due to a corona infection. “Perhaps there are also places in the DNA that ensure that people are protected against corona or symptoms.”

Of all participants in the Lifelines corona study, 18 percent of households with children have a person who has been infected with the virus.
