Life sentence for Russian soldier who shot Ukrainian civilian

Reporter Sander van Hoorn from Ukraine:

“The fact that the Russian soldier confessed does not seem to have played a role in his conviction. The judge probably did not take this into account, otherwise the Russian would have received a lower sentence.

The court-assigned lawyer has had no contact with the Russians about the lawsuit. The Russians, in turn, say they are not aware of the process.

It is impossible to say at this point whether the process was completely fair. You may wonder whether a different outcome would have been possible.

It is important for Ukraine to set an example with this first process. With this, the country wants to show that it properly demonstrates crimes against humanity and war crimes. That is very important, because according to Ukraine, more than 10,000 crimes have now been documented.”
