Sayfullo Saipov, 35, has been jailed for life for killing eight people on a New York bike path in 2017. The prosecution had demanded the death penalty, but the jury could not agree.
On October 31, 2017, Saipov rented a van and drove into a bike path in the New York borough of Manhattan. Two Americans, five Argentines and a Belgian woman were killed.
The jury already found Saipov guilty of murder. They also found him guilty of multiple counts of attempted murder for the purpose of joining the terrorist group Islamic State (IS).
The prosecution wanted Saipov to receive the death penalty. But for that sentence to be passed, the jury must agree unanimously. Because that didn’t work, Saipov now gets a life sentence without the chance of parole.
