Life saved in restaurant by bizarre coincidence: ‘Didn’t feel like fries’

The security guards surrounding the threatened Breda lawyer Peter Schouten saved a life in Helmond on Saturday evening. “The universe is miraculous,” says the lawyer. “Saved a life because I didn’t feel like fries.”

“We went to a carnival party”, Peter recalls. “We walked into a restaurant around eight o’clock and someone just had a cardiac arrest.”

“What a team!”

His security guards did not hesitate for a moment and sprang into action. “What a team!”, the lawyer sighs proudly. “One immediately started giving chest compressions, another removed the vomit and dentures from the victim’s throat, the third ran to get the AED from the armored compartment, while the fourth handled communications.”

Anyone who stood in the way in a panic was neatly directed away. “A bar table was immediately pushed in front of the man lying on the floor. A large knife was brought to cut away his clothes. A security guard took on CPR, the man came running with the AED and after about eight minutes could the victim be taken away breathing by the rushed paramedics.”

“Even as a diversionary tactic, this wouldn’t have worked.”

Schouten hopes that the elderly victim will make it. In any case, he is very impressed with how his security guards worked. “Guys, what great guys you are!”

What he also finds special is how his security guards also kept an eye on him while rescuing the victim. “Stay there for a while, sir,” he was told. “Then I see you well.”

Schouten naturally complied. “Even as a diversionary tactic, this wouldn’t have worked!”

“So there can be such a small difference between life and death…”

Schouten speaks of a bizarre coincidence that they ended up in this situation. He and his security guards were looking for a place to eat and they could not go to two other restaurants. They then walked towards a snack bar, but Peter did not see much in that.

“At the corner I saw a restaurant with an empty table by the window. Then I said: let’s eat here. So there can be such a small difference between life and death… The universe is miraculous. A life saved because I didn’t feel like fries…”
