Life in the Countryside: A Mobile Home Retreat Amidst the Pandemic

You said you bought a mobile home during the coronavirus pandemic, is that right?

It was bought for me by my family, or rather it was the idea of my ex-husband Honza (Jan Krause). It is not exactly a mobile home, it is not a house on wheels, rather a Nordic-type wooden building that fits beautifully into the surrounding nature. It was a nice gesture from Honza. It is located right next to the cottage, where we used to go together when our boys were still small. There are too many of us with our sons’ families now, and we wouldn’t all fit in the cottage, so I’m happy for her.

It is an almost seventy square meter apartment. It has a fireplace, a terrace and huge French windows, you get up in the morning and you see a wonderful view of the valley. In addition, it retains heat well in winter.

That sounds idyllic. But don’t you miss Prague?

I still half live in Prague, I live in the suburbs, where the neighbors are very nice. I’m tied up in the metropolis for work, I couldn’t commute every day. But the morning traffic is hell, everyone is driving from the surrounding villages towards Prague when I go to work. I therefore prefer to arrange meetings for later in the morning.

Have you always been drawn to the countryside?

I am from Prague, I was born in Košíře, Prague, but I grew up near Petřín, that was my district. My mom still lives there, so I find myself there regularly.

Mom is already ninety-four years old. Vitality is evidently preserved in your family. You will celebrate your seventieth birthday in a year, which no one would have guessed…

I can’t fully confirm the longevity in the family, but mom holds her own and has such a clear mind. She still looks youthful, although of course she is already a fragile grandmother. However, her head works very well.

With her sons Adam (left) and David, thanks to whom she is already a grandmother of four.

Is he still interested in what’s going on in the world?

She has a computer on which she gets quite angry when it doesn’t work as well as she would like. She enjoys surfing the Internet, she can look up anything. Sometimes I get a little angry with her because I think these networks have a negative effect on people. Mom wants to be in the know and reads a lot about current issues. This is not good in her case, she tends to be sad about it. I would prefer if she read beautiful literature, so that she would rather rise above the ruin of the world.

And do you avoid negative news yourself?

I’m so busy that I don’t have much time for them. Rather, the surroundings inform me. Of course I follow the events, but I avoid them as much as I can. Such news kills and depresses a person, I try to appreciate every day and think of positive things. I have friends in Ukraine, so I learn something from them too.

You are already a grandmother of three if I am not mistaken.

Already quadruple. Adam already has three boys and David has one girl.

Are grandchildren making you younger?

Not at all, they rather encourage me. With children, you suddenly forget everything.

How do you enjoy being a grandmother?

There is little free time and the children are a bit distant, and the other grandparents also visit. The oldest grandson goes to school, the youngest is still very dependent on his mother. David’s little girl had her second birthday in March. She is amazing, very unique. He marries all the boys, he’s such a savage. If possible, I’m very happy with them. When they come to my cottage in the summer, it’s a joy.

Do you take all four at once?

I probably wouldn’t be able to handle them myself at their young age, they stay with me and their parents. But I’m looking forward to enjoying them myself when they grow up. The strange thing is that when they are with me, they are nice and suddenly so grown up. Once the moms arrive, they feel empowered and go on a rampage. The parents are a little surprised.

You seem to be more of a “spoiler” grandma.

Yes, but I still have to be strict sometimes. However, I don’t have much reason to do so yet. I enjoy messing with them.

And your sons and daughters-in-law approve?

Their parents don’t mind, they do too. (Laughs)

The gentleman was not shy and started to chat with me on stage. I had to arrange things

A novelty in your repertoire on the small stage of the Studio DVA theater is Ticket Book by Arnošt Goldflam. I watched it recently and was honestly a bit startled by the interactivity… Fortunately, I was sitting in the middle of the row and wasn’t “called out” by you.

Oh, if you didn’t sit on the edge of the row, you didn’t become its representative, right? But be careful, I’m also very shy.

I couldn’t even recite a poem at school. However, it was not possible for this peculiar character, and the creators and I moderated it quite a bit. In the original text, it is a much sharper lady, she almost puts the audience against the wall.

In her one-woman show Biletářka. “Mr. Goldflam wrote the play under the previous regime, when it was aimed at the then rulers of power. The audience sometimes thinks that I am playing myself in the production.”

It is a paraphrase of a woman who – if given the opportunity to command by the audience – will try to assert herself. He has a certain feeling of underappreciation. She wants to assert herself and feels that the audience is threatening her and stealing her “brilliant” ideas. Mr. Goldflam wrote the play under the previous regime, when it was aimed at the then rulers of power. The audience sometimes thinks that I am playing myself in the production.

Are there any oddities?

Do you think the audience would boo me? That hasn’t happened to me yet. (laughs) Maybe someone walked out on me during the show. One gentleman was not shy at all and started chatting with me on stage. My job is to bring order, that’s what the character is about.

Women’s emancipation is not what fundamentally inspires me. But then again, I don’t like things

Like Bobina Holá, you are a general. Aren’t you like that in life?

I’m not. Women’s emancipation is not what fundamentally inspires me. But then again, I don’t like things, I’m somewhere in between.

Your younger son is directing the production, and it’s not the first time. And that you talk about your own life?

I sometimes get the feeling from the people in the audience that they are so tuned in. When we had public dress rehearsals, two ladies came and they were so cool. One of them said that she was looking forward to going to the theater and Mrs. Kraus was shouting at her. Each rerun is quite different with a specific audience composition. Some want to communicate with me in the show, others are shy and uncomfortable.

I try to tease them at first, but later I start to involve them in the action… Sometimes the audience likes it and even says that they want to be representatives. There will be those who stand up to me and join the game. I am gradually realizing that I have to be prepared for such a situation as well. At the beginning, I always have a big question mark in my head, what will happen tonight.

So do you have room for improvisation?

Of course, but I have to keep it under control, I can’t let myself be thrown away.

He also has you under his baton in the stage comedy About Love. Does it have authority with you?

Definitely yes. And I’m glad for that. Adam and I have a similar sense of humor and mindset.

After all, it must be a different feeling than being led by a stranger…

I mainly tell him what I think and what I would imagine. We try to accommodate and understand each other. Authority is always important, one must go to the market with skin and overcome one’s doubts. What I like about actors is when I feel that they have a certain shyness or shyness in them.

Do you think acting is more civil?

Yes, but above all more genuine. It then draws me into the story much more.

Which performance, in which you perform as a permanent member of the Studio DVA theater troupe, is closest to you?

I like them all so I can’t say. In general, they are quite similar in some respects, they mainly discuss relationships between men and women. About love, tolerance, about the battle between the sexes. People ask me if I play myself and if I identify with the characters. It’s not like that at all. I try to get out of my emotions and be as natural as possible, but it doesn’t bother me that I’m playing such a character next to Karel Roden (my ex-partner).

Your whole vacation is packed with reruns on summer scenes not only in Prague. Does playing outdoors have a different vibe for you?

The Studio DVA theater in Prague’s Vyšehrad and the Exhibition Center in Holešovice have summer scenes. Outside the capital, at the fortress in Divice (near North Bohemian Loun) and in Vítězná near Dvora Králové nad Labem. The game is different every time with our energy and that of the audience, anyway it’s a nice change compared to the home scene.

Do you prefer to spend the summer at home or abroad?

Recently, I prefer the Czech Republic, they are beautiful. When we go on tour with the theater, we look around the countryside and enjoy ourselves. There are places I haven’t explored yet…

I like to return, for example, to Třeboň and Podkrkonoší, where I partly grew up. The last time I was in Costa Rica for almost a month, in the future I would like to go to southern Europe, which I like because of the people there. However, I don’t need to go abroad at all costs, I’m happy even at the cottage.

You continue to appear in film and television roles. Are you not about to retire?

I played a similar character in Krásno. A bitter woman. It’s interesting that they assign me such dryers

We last saw you in Seven Steps to Power, where you played the mother of Eva Josefíková alias Anna Malá, who is modeled on Jana Nečasová, formerly Nagyová. What was it like to play the parents of the former prime minister’s lover?

The series is excellently made and the first parts are dramatically exciting. When a person takes a peek into such an environment, it gives him a sense of awe. My head was spinning when I realized that this is just how politics works. Evička was great, her serial mother emotionally blackmailed her, which affected Anna’s development, or rather it was one of its causes. After watching it, I was so upset that I almost hung up on filming.

That’s it. It was disgusting to me. I played a similar character in the black comedy Krásno. A bitter, repulsive woman. It’s interesting that they assign me such dryers. (Laughs)

What do you think it is? You once described it as a stigma you carry from Jan Kraus, who played crooks in his youth…

That was taken out of context in some article, I just said it jokingly in a recent radio interview. It could affect Honza, and I wouldn’t like that. I think it is more due to my theatrical characters, which are usually tragicomic.

Throughout the summer, he exhibits his watercolors, gouache and drawings in the library in Týništ nad Orlicí. “This passion will probably never leave me,” he says.

All your life, in addition to acting, you have been involved in creative work, mainly painting and ceramics, after all, you graduated from AVU. At what moments does inspiration flow to you?

When walking in nature and listening to music, I like classics, rock and jazz. They are sudden moments that stay with me, and I need to realize them.

What scares me in art today is that artificial intelligence can create an image according to a given theme and color scheme. I like fleeting things that also have their imperfections. But I consistently separate acting and art, I can’t learn text and paint at the same time. I have to be calm about my free work.

Do you follow the current Czech art scene?

Yes, but I don’t like total avant-garde. I notice that in recent years there have been a plethora of great, not-so-well-known young female authors. They are also interesting in their thinking. It’s unexpected for me, previously space was given mainly to men. But I don’t have time to see all the exhibitions.

We can now visit the exhibition of your works in Týništ nad Orlicí in Rychnovsk. What can you tell me about the show?

You can find it at your local library at least throughout the summer. I have about thirty watercolors, gouache and drawings with melancholic natural and figurative motifs. This passion will probably never leave me.
