It’s been a week since New York’s schools were officially closed due to the coronavirus. Parents around me had to juggle their jobs with their kids at home. I took advantage of these moments with the children to still try to have a good time.
But the situation is very complicated. Appeals for donations are launched by restaurant owners who have had to lay off their employees. Not all will be entitled to unemployment insurance.
The Rainbow Challenge
Earlier this week, in my first article on the daily life of a French woman in New York during the coronavirus, I told you about the spirit of mutual aid that reigns in my neighborhood of Carroll Gardens, in Brooklyn. Here is an example that I find cool. A local mom came up with the idea of drawing a rainbow and sticking it on her window. Within a week, these rainbows started growing all over the place. This morning, we stuck ours on our windows.
The project is now spreading across the world! Why not join this project and indicate your own rainbow? Send me an email at [email protected] and I will tell you the procedure.
Combine the useful with the pleasant
I did not have the courage to prepare a whole course program for my eldest child. He is only 4 years old… I decided to improvise as the events unfold. Demonstration against the backdrop of an online classical music concert to learn the names of the different instruments in French and English. So the sushi wand turned into a conductor’s wand.
Another afternoon was devoted to developing a recipe for chocolate chip cookies. Introduce the basic ingredients, measure and mix. I’m going to surprise you, but the crèche offers cooking classes… for a fee. As a French woman, I tell myself that the initiation to cooking, I must take care of it. It’s in my DNA, what do you want! ????
Strengthening containment in New York
On Sunday March 22, 2020, New York Governor Cuomo announced stricter rules in terms of confinement. See our update on the coronavirus in New York. The difference with France being that many more sectors of activity are considered essential and therefore always open. Thus the famous liquor stores (translate by wine merchant) will remain open just like garages and public transport, with a reduced frequency.
New York State has become the new epicenter of the coronavirus in the United States. Hopefully compliance with containment measures will bear fruit and limit the pressure on hospitals and medical centers. I wish you courage, at home with your loved ones or in the field if you are a health professional.
