The prevalence of type 2 diabetes continues to increase.
REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA — Diabetes is an increasingly common condition experienced by society. Millions of people have to manage this condition carefully so as not to cause adverse health effects.
According to Riskesdas 2018, almost all provinces showed an increase in prevalence diabetes mellitus in 2013-2018, except for East Nusa Tenggara. Meanwhile in the UK, the disease, also known as type 2 diabetes, accounts for 90 percent of cases.
There are two types of diabetes, namely type 1 and type two. Type 1 is a condition in which the body’s immune system attacks and destroys insulin-producing cells. Whereas in type 2 diabetes, the body does not produce enough insulin or the body’s cells do not react to insulin.
A new study from the University of Florida, USA shows that the life expectancy of people with type 2 diabetes can increase up to 10 years by taking one simple action, namely managing weight. Researchers say this life expectancy increases if individuals with type 2 diabetes have body weight healthy ones.
The researchers followed patients between the ages of 50 and 80. They said the findings could encourage individuals to stick to their treatment plans.
However, there is one caveat to this study. Researchers say, the increase in life expectancy is related to the patient’s age and weight.
PhD student at the University Hamed Kianmehr said the study showed that individuals with very high levels of blood sugar, blood pressure, cholesterol and body mass index had the potential to increase life expectancy by more than 10 years if they controlled their weight.
Furthermore, the researchers write that the estimated increase in life expectancy associated with weight loss is primarily about the potential for reducing cardiovascular disease.
“Lower body mass index was associated with a lower risk of heart failure, angina, and re-vascularization, which in turn was associated with a lower risk of death,” the researchers said. Express.co.ukTuesday (17/5/2022).
