Despite the setbacks caused by the corona pandemic, Germany is showing a clear upward trend in life expectancy.
Life expectancy in Germany has recovered after the losses during the corona pandemic. In 2023, women reached an average life expectancy of 83.3 years and men 78.6 years. This represents an increase of 0.4 years in each case compared to the previous year, as reported by the Federal Statistical Office.
Regional differences between East and West
During the pandemic, significant differences were seen between life expectancies in East and West Germany. In 2023, the East in particular recorded a stronger increase, which led to an equalization of life expectancies.

Gender-specific life expectancy
The life expectancy of men and women continues to differ. The difference between the sexes is particularly striking in East and West Germany. Men in the West live an average of 1.4 years longer than their peers in the East. But there is also good news: the life expectancy of women and men is becoming more and more similar.
