A painter in India lost his hands in a traffic accident and will now be able to continue with his passion for art, thanks to a woman and a team of more than 15 doctors.
After undergoing a double limb transplant, Raj Kumar breathes slowly to start a new life. This is a 45-year-old painter who woke up with hands that, although not his, now belong to him.
In 2020, Raj Kumar was hit by a train when he lost control of his bicycle and, despite having survived such an accident, his life was not the same, because, in addition to not being able to perform daily tasks, he was unable to continue with his work. vocation.
But everything changed in January 2024, thanks to a woman’s donation.
“She inspired us about the importance of donating organs. She informed us that she was willing to donate her organs if she died. So we remembered her wish and gave our consent for the transplant,” said Lalita Grover, the donor’s sister.
It was the first procedure of its kind in New Delhi, India’s capital, according to Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, where the operation was carried out. For more than 12 hours, a team of more than 15 doctors reattached nerves, veins, muscles and skin.
“The donor had promised that her organs would be donated after her death. Her family also knew it, they were compatible. And after evaluating the situation, they proceeded with the transplant,” said one of the plastic surgeons.
Currently, Raj Kumar is enjoying his new hands and, according to local media, his recovery was completely successful.
