As the representative of the Ministry of Culture Lita Kokale explains to the portal “Delfi”, the parties continue the dialogue to achieve the goal, calling on the Liepāja Theater to make detailed calculations of the impact of Covid-19 on the theatre’s operations.

Liepaja Theater is the only professional theater with the legal status of a municipality and not a state-owned company, so it is not possible to receive direct funding from the Ministry of Culture, which is borrowed by Covid-19, ie the Ministry of Culture cannot provide the theater with the same support as state-owned theaters.

“It should be emphasized that the state support provided to the cultural organizations affected by the crisis does not compensate for the losses caused by Covid-19, but helps them to stabilize their financial situation, primarily by providing funds for employees’ compensation,” emphasized Dace Wilson, Secretary of State for Culture. Therefore, the management of Liepāja Theater was also asked to make detailed calculations directly about the impact of Covid-19 on the current operation of the theater, and to submit them to the Ministry of Culture for evaluation.

During the conversation, the manager of Liepāja Theater Laukšteins expressed his readiness to apply for support from the State Cultural Capital Fund (SCCF) in order to apply for funding for the preparation of the started and new theater productions. A. Deksnis, Deputy Chairman of the Liepāja City Council for Culture and Sports, expressed the municipality’s commitment to ensure the continuation of the theater, informing that the municipality will review the activities of all its capital companies and decide on the necessary support in August.

It has already been reported that in order to mitigate the negative effects of the Covid-19 crisis in the cultural sector, the Ministry of Culture has achieved additional funding for the SCCF, through which a number of new targeted programs for the creation of new cultural values will be implemented. Both state and municipal cultural institutions, as well as entrepreneurs and non-governmental organizations will be able to apply for projects in the new target programs.

There are 2 professional groups in Liepāja – Liepāja Theater, whose legal status is a municipal capital company, and VSIA “Liepāja Symphony Orchestra”, which has the status of a state capital company. In the economic crisis that hit Latvia in 2009, the State Ministry of Culture took responsibility for the future activities of the Liepaja Symphony Orchestra, while the Liepaja Municipality took responsibility for the Liepaja Theater.
