As announced, director Valters Sīlis will be the artistic director of the new board, while Eva Ciekurze, who was already a member of the previous board, will be in the administrative and economic field.
The employees of the Liepāja theater interviewed by “TV Kurzeme” are satisfied with the new board and say that the earlier disagreements have disappeared. “After five years, Eva has gotten to know the troupe very well. She knows the people, she knows the situations, she knows the theater. This is very good, and she knows all its administrative matters very well, and accordingly, on the other hand, Walter also knows the troupe very well, which are specific actors. .Worked a lot with us and wonderful; [valde ir] a very good combination,” says Liepāja theater actor Armands Kaušelis.
The actors have not forgotten the long-standing problem of low wages and hope that the new board will solve it.
“In my case, it’s about survival, it’s not about living on my theater salary. I’m surviving. Basically, putting together the family money that comes to us with my wife and me, then we together somehow, but if I had to live alone , I have to pay everything that I have to pay accordingly, then I don’t care,” said Armands Kaušelis.
The average salary for an actor in Liepāja theater is 1,407 euros before taxes.
For comparison, the average salary for an actor in the state theater is 1,593 euros before taxes, according to the Ministry of Culture. The reason for the difference is that the Liepāja theater is under the auspices of the municipality, a large number of other theaters receive state funding.
Timurs Thomsons, a former member of the temporary board of the Liepāja Theatre, explains: “For example, with the Valmiera Theatre, we have a difference of half a million in grants, and that is a big difference between all professional theaters.”
The new board of the Liepāja theater is aware of the salary problems, but says that finances are limited and they must hope for state support. Eva Ciekurze points out: “It is of decisive importance whether the state will be able to make a political decision that they do it. Because what the Liepāja theater lacks, compared to state theaters, is a very specific amount of money. It doesn’t matter for what purpose the state spends it would give, it would be a reflection.”
Meanwhile, Valters Sílis emphasizes: “Liepāja serves this entire region, which is very wide, and there we need to find out how the Liepāja theater does what all the state’s theaters do, how it will become more similar.”
The new board hopes to improve the situation in several areas, including internal communication, the shortcomings of which were blamed on the theater’s previous management.
