In Latvia, the first play for babies “Me and my mother”, which premiered at the Liepāja Puppet Theater at the end of July under the direction of Lithuanian director Karolina Jurkštaite, will be supplemented by the exhibition ” representatives.
Both works – the production and the newly arranged exhibition – are complementary, as they see nature as an important source of human creativity, education and inspiration.
The play “Me and my mother” conjures up a gentle, receptive and playful environment, just as harmonious and safe as we each find with our loving mother, and as wide and giving as mother nature. It invites you to play in nature and with toys given by nature.
In its turn, the exhibition “Returning from the seashore” brings to the premises of the Puppet Theater mythical images, birds and animals created from natural materials, sea-smoothed pebbles, trees, sea manure, buttons, beads and abandoned tools. Among the images you can recognize a proud ostrich, a duck with a broken leg, a pair of sunken penguins, a Mara tree full of birds and even an Atlantis model. Some of the exhibits are loud, while others, such as the fork husband and shovel wife, are ready to change their hair arrangement and facial expression according to the mood of the visitors.

“I have met all the images of the exhibition on long walks along the sea. The inability to pass a washed tree branch, stone, shard or object if I see an interesting grimace, movement, body part, such as a leg or wing. It sometimes takes years for the gifts transferred from the sea to turn into concrete birds, animals and other mythical images. But the first impression, association, fairy tale or myth plot that I imagine at that time has remained in the subconscious, ”explains the author of the exhibition Saule Degutīte-Šieksteliene.
The author of the exhibition, Saule Degutīte-Šieksteliene, is an actress, director and set designer, director of the Vilnius Stalo Teatras (Table Theater) and founder of the Object Theater in Lithuania. Saules Degutīte-Šieksteliene’s current professional activity is related to the staging of children’s and youth theater performances in the theatrical language of the object and conducting educational master classes. She has worked as a choir conductor, director and set designer, actress in TV series and children’s and youth performances. Her first production “Spruce – the Queen of Snakes” (2005) has received international awards for best performance and best directorial work. The highest Lithuanian award in professional theater art – the Golden Cross (2013) – was awarded to her as the best actress in the show “Table Tales”. The same work won the Golden Cross as the best performance in the puppet theater category.
The exhibition at the Liepāja Puppet Theater, Rožu Square 5/6, can be seen before and after the performances, and a visit to the exhibition is included in the price of the performance. The exhibition will be open to the public until the beginning of November. In turn, the next performances “Me and my mother” can be watched on September 10, 13 and 20.
